Psy Racks Up One Billon Views On YouTube

GANGNAM Style, the video by South Korean singer Psy, has become the first in the history of YouTube to rack up one billion viewers.

The video, which pokes fun at the rich socialites living in the Gangnam area of Seoul, has not only inspired a new dance style but also spawned parodies and copies. The success of the song has also shone a new spotlight on K-Pop, the Korean music genre that kicked off more than a decade ago but only a few years ago began to make waves internationally.

Previously, the Korean singer had released five studio albums but none had been a hit in the West. Since his video went viral and began to draw international attention, Psy has become a global sensation, performing with Madonna and other stars. He's also inspired flashmobs, one scheduled to be held New Year’s Eve at the Brandenburg Gate.
