Billy Ray To Scribe TV Series Last Tycoon

CAPTAIN Phillips and The Hunger Games scribe Billy Ray is teaming with HBO to pen a new TV series based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Last Tycoon.

Ray will also executive produce and direct the pilot, should it move forward, with Chris Keyser (Party of Five) on-board as showrunner. Fitzgerald, considered one of the greatest American writers of all time, was working on The Last Tycoon at the time of his death in 1940 and the unfinished work was published posthumously a year later. It was inspired by the real life film producer Irving Thalberg’s rise to power in Hollywood and his conflicts with MGM studio chief Louis B. Mayer.

The Hollywood Reporter notes the deal represents HBO's latest studio buy, joining Ryan Murphy pilot Open from 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. Television's Damon Lindelof series The Leftovers.

Harol Pinter was the screenwriter on the 1976 movie version of The Last Tycoon, starring Robert de Niro.
