Hollande Tells Google To Deal Or Face Music

PRESIDENT Francoise Hollande told Google CEO Eric Schmidt in a meeting October 29 to negotiate in good faith with French media outlets over content disputes and come to a solution by year-end.

French media outlets want search engines to share some of the advertising revenue they get from searches for news contained on media websites. Hollande has warned if a solution couldn’t be found, France would pass legislation similar to a draft bill in Germany that will force search engines to pay commissions to German media websites.

Google has threatened to exclude French media sites from its search results if the bill is passed, but it is a issue that is clearly not going to go away easily. Brazil’s National Association of Newspapers this month stopped using Google News after Google refused to pay for content.
